Villafranca Castle, sitting at the heart of Villafranca di Verona, was more than just a fortress of yore. Its roots can be traced back to the 13th century territorial strategies of Verona, where it served as a critical piece in the Scaliger defensive system, known as Serraglio. Strategically situated between Verona and Mantua, this castle was a guardian of the region's defense. The initial design was purely defensive, but it started to evolve and adapt during the Scaliger era (13th - 14th century).
The castle received further enhancements and adaptations from the 15th to 18th centuries. However, with the advent of the Renaissance, it forsook its military purpose and has remained preserved for centuries. Today, remnants of the defensive walls and certain towers offer a tantalizing glimpse into the medieval architecture of the castle – a fascinating vestige of the transformations it endured in its history.
