Forte Santa Caterina, previously known as Werk Hess, was constructed between 1848 and 1856 as part of Verona's first field artillery camp. The fort was constructed under the supervision of Major Conrad Petrasch and was named after Santa Caterina Church. Today, Forte Santa Caterina serves as a testament to a historical fort's natural and environmental integration, standing tall as the architectural and prospective crown of the fortified city. It is part of a defensive system that includes Forte Porta Nuova, Torre Tombetta on the right bank, and Forte San Michele on the left bank.
