The Papilių Pilis Hillfort: A Tangible Remnant of Kelmė's History

The Papilių Pilis Hillfort, an oval-shaped archaeological site, sits in a valley, where the Kražantis River bends. The Hillfort, covering an area of approximately 65x45 meters and featuring a 2-meter-deep ditch, is a tangible trace of the region's ancient history. Scattered and shattered pieces of ceramics have been discovered on the hill, as well as visible remnants of the ditch present today. The walls of the hill, reaching up to 7-8 meters high, were first explored in 1967 by the Lithuanian History Institute. The Hillfort is believed to trace back to the 1st millennium BC and extend to the 14th century AD.
