The ancient scar in Papilalio: a millennia-old Lithuanian hill fort

In the woods near the village of Papilalio, the ancient scar remains a captivating testament to the past. Formed from brought-in rocks, the hill fort takes the shape of a triangular structure with varying heights from 5-11 meters and a base of around 35 meters wide and 15 meters high. A 15-meter-long, 1-meter-deep scar, found 6 meters below its base, marks the site where a former lake of Pilies once lay (now a pond). Excavations of this hill fort have been conducted by Liudvikas Kšivickis in 1903 and by the Institute of Lithuanian History in 1967. Dating from the 1st millennium BC to the 13th century AD, the history of this hill fort presents a compelling story of the passage of time.
