Second Moša Mound: A pre-Roman Hillfort in Aukštadvaris, Lithuania

The Second Moša Mound, located in Aukštadvaris Regional Park, is a new addition to the over 1,000 hillforts found in Lithuania. It has been named the Second Moša Mound to distinguish it from the First Mound of Žuklijai. Artefacts found on the site suggest human settlement in the first millennium AD. Gytis Juodėnas, a hillfort enthusiast, explains his hobby and the discovery process. The mound is part of the Aukštadvaris Mound and settlement, a historical site dating back to 4,000-5,000 years ago.

It served as a settlement and was also a place of large-scale farming and crafting. In the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, people settled on the site, and homesteads were built near it in the 5th century. Between the 6th and 8th centuries, a rather large settlement grew near the mound. Archaeological and historical evidence suggests that one of the main roads ran through the mound along the Verknė and Nemunas rivers, leading to the rapid growth of the settlement.
