The Peevish Stone for the Mantuan Belfiore Martyrs

The Peevish Stone for the Mantuan Belfiore Martyrs

Constructed in 1872, stone's throw from Mantua, this monument has had more than its fair share of squabbles - it was torn down in 1930 and rejuvenated in 2002.

The Belfiore Martyrs Monument, proudly unveiled in 1872, stands as a testament to the Italian Risorgimento heroes who met their end at Valletta Belfiore between 1851 and 1855. Carved from Carrara marble, the monument consists of a sarcophagus and a statue of the Genius of Humanity. The flanks of the sarcophagus hold bas-reliefs of the Belfiore Martyrs, while the statue of the Genius of Humanity is wrapped in an inscrutable inscription. Attilio Mori, a piece of the plot, also merits a spot on the statue. Initially, the monument found itself in the midst of popularity contests in its early days. However, it was not until 1930 that it was removed and restored only in 2002.
