The Werk San Mattia Built by Framework Franz

Verona's Forte San Mattia, built by the renowned Austrian military engineer, Franz von Scholl, is a marvel of fortification engineering. Originally named Werk San Mattia, it is a fortification nestled on the hills north of Verona, part of the complex system of Verona’s defensive fortifications.

Forte San Mattia, initially called Werk San Mattia, is a fortification nestled on the hills north of Verona, part of the complex system of Verona's defensive fortifications. The fortified structure was constructed in 1843 under the direction of Franz von Scholl, a major general from the Imperial Royal Office of Fortifications of Verona, along with his student Michael von Maly. The irregular shape of the fort is typical of mountain fortifications.

The complex plan, meticulously designed to fit the site, resembles a lunette with a main front. On the main front, the large casemate is noticeable, with a linear split plan, raised on one, two, or three floors, adapting the base of the operation to the contour of the hill. In addition to housing the garrison, the fort is designed for artillery in casemates and for infantry. In front of the casemate, on the platform, were the positions for artillery in the open. On the rear side, a three-tier staircase projects out.
