The Iron Age hillfort of Surbliu: A Moated Mystery

Surbliu, an Iron Age archaeological site, lies near the village of the same name. Its square-shaped walls, standing 10 meters high, are encircled by a moat on the north side. The moat, roughly 77x54 meters wide and 65 meters long, with walls 2 meters high and 2 meters deep, leads to a 12-meter wide, 0.5-meter high platform. Below the platform is a 8-meter wide terrace, 2 meters down. Once heavily wooded, Surbliu was excavated in 1253, 1954, 1962, and 1989, revealing its history spans from the 1st Millennium BCE to the 13th Century CE. The hillfort is featured in the 1991 publication 'Lietuvos kultūros ir gamtos paminklų atlasas'.
