Plungė's Enigmatic Hill: Guardian of Ancient Relics

The Plunge Hill, or Pilale, is a notable hill situated in Plunge's Old District, Babrungo. It is conveniently located 200 meters from the old city gates on the right side, where the All Saints' reliquary used to reside. The placement of the hill is far from accidental, as it was intentionally designed to protect these sacred relics. Standing 5 meters above the surrounding terrain, the Plunge Hill has a quadrangular shape, measuring 40 meters from east to west and 25 meters from north to south. The northern and southern sides stand at 0.5 meters high, while the western and southern slopes have a gentle gradient. The hill was extensively studied by the Lithuanian History Institute, led by Adolfas Tautavičius, in 1964. It is listed in the National Register of Cultural Heritage and was recognized as a culturally significant state asset in 2005.
