Varkaliai Hillfort: A Hidden Gem in Western Lithuania

Hidden among the wilderness of western Lithuania, on the outskirts of the village of Varkaliai, lies a remarkable archaeological site – **Varkaliai Hillfort**. This fortified site sits on the western slope of Babrungo Hill, approximately 350 meters east of Gandingo hillfort. The area enclosed by the fortification of Varkaliai hillfort is approximately 33x36 meters in size. A lanko-shaped structure is found on the summit of Varkaliai hillfort, 3 meters high, with a 20 meter wide opening, within which a 25 meter wide, 3 meter deep ditch is found. The fort was constructed with earthen walls and a ditch. **Varkaliai Hillfort** was excavated in the 1930s by Lieplaukis L.
