The hill ancient hillfort in Šakiai region

Mikytų piliakalnis, Pilies kalnas, Pilis – a fortification that stands quiet and extraordinary in Skuodo Rajonas, near Mikytu Monastery and Notėnai parish. Its trapezoidal shape, squared by notched walls measuring 25 meters in length, 26 meters in width at the east end, 8 meters in height and width at the notches, hints at its strategic importance. The east end is capped with a 40-meter-long, 3-meter-high, 20-meter-wide platform, from which one can see up to 30 meters from the edge of the ditch, with 11 meters in width, 1.5 meters in height and a 1.5-meter-deep 3-meter-wide moat. A 3-meter-high wall is built on the moat. The hillfort is dated from the 1st century BC to the 13th century. Its walls were stabilized in 1999. In 1938, 300 meters west of the hillfort, archaeological finds from the 10th to 11th centuries were discovered. In 1971, similar finds were discovered.
