Exeter Cathedral, a structure with a Roman past, was erected in the 10th century. In the early 1100s, a new cathedral was constructed in the Norman style. The original choir had two storeys, later modified to three. Bishop Walter Bronescombe, appointed in 1258, led the transformation into the Decorated Gothic style, preserving much of the Norman structure while incorporating local materials. The cathedral was largely completed by about 1400, with the addition of the chapter house and chantry chapels still to come.
