Abandoned ambitions: once-mighty Tonedale Mills in limbo Again (2008 housing

Tonedale Mills, a relic of the Industrial Revolution, was initially established in the 18th century. For over 200 years, it was owned by the Fox family and was renowned for producing Taunton serge. However, the mill faces challenges due to extensive deterioration, widespread asbestos contamination, and rising costs, which created formidable logistical and financial obstacles for the restoration project. As a result, Somerset Council had to abandon their 2008 plans for a £20 million regeneration project for housing. While the site's future remains uncertain, it seems improbable that it would be entirely abandoned without some form of intervention from heritage authorities.
