Elworthy Barrows

Elworthy Barrows is a partially completed hill fort dating back to the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age. It is designated as a scheduled ancient monument (No: 188401) and is situated in the civil parish of Brompton Ralph, near Wiveliscombe, Somerset, England, on the fringes of Exmoor National Park along the Brendon Hills Ridgeway. The site covers an area of approximately 3.5 hectares (8.6 acres) and is surrounded by a bank and ditch. During its construction phase, the site exhibits clear evidence of abandonment, with only partial completion of its defensive earthworks. Iron Age construction techniques and societal organization can be observed at this site, potentially serving as a stock enclosure, place of refuge, or redistribution center during the late Bronze Age to early Iron Age transition (eighth to fifth centuries BC).
