13th-century Castle Chapel with Awe-Inspiring Romanesque Portal in Cubells,

Santa Maria del Castell de Cubells, located in the Noguera district of Spain, was once a chapel of a castle that dominated the village of Cubells. Built in the 13th century, it is an example of the late Romanesque style. The original chapel, a single nave with a semicircular apse, was extended to the west in 1748, being equipped with an additional cor and a simple portal. However, the primary decorative sculpture is concentrated on the southern wall’s magnificent Romanesque portada, featuring six rounded arches in degradation, resting on six pairs of monolithic columns. The decorative motifs and themes, common in workshops until the 13th century, form part of the repertory: dentil, diamond points, interlaced arches, and low-relief figurative designs.
