The ruins of the Castell de Grialó

Explore the ruins of the Castell de Grialó, a cultural asset of national interest located in Artesa de Segre.

Located in the municipality of Artesa de Segre, the Castell de Grialó is a cultural asset of national interest situated on the Puig de Grialó. From this small hill at the edge of the Força plateau, one can see the village of Colldelrat and a wide view of the Segre valley. The fortification was once part of the territory of the castle of Montmagastre and likely served as a secondary fortress to monitor troop movements.

The ruins of the fortification stretched approximately 21 meters in length by 7.5 meters at its widest point. The square-plan tower stands about 9 meters high with walls measuring 80 cm thick. The exterior stonework is composed of large, well-arranged blocks with joints, while the interior uses more irregular stones bonded with lime mortar. Evidence suggests the construction dates to the 13th or 14th centuries, though it may have older roots.

Several water features and structures are carved into or built near the site. To the east, there is a trapezoidal cistern and a small deposit both excavated into the rock, while another large cistern sits to the south. The walls also show signs of spillolets. Nearby stands the Romanesque church of Sant Miquel de Grialó, which features two naves and dates back to the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century.
