The Hidden 1st Millennium BC Hillfort Discovery in Spitrėnai, Utena County

Hidden among the houses of Spitrėnai, Utena County, lies a remarkable discovery – a hillfort dating back to the 1st millennium BC. Excavated in the first half of the 20th century, the hillfort boasts stone walls that once stood 9-10 meters high, encircling a 0.2-hectare area. In 1973, 233 square meters of a common floor were unearthed, dating back to 1-1.5 centuries BC and containing Stone Age tools, wooden and stone objects, pottery, animal and plant remains. The hillfort is registered under the State registration number A964, issued on 19 December 2005, and is protected as a cultural monument of national importance by a resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 19 May 1998, No. 612.
