Utenos forests guard the 1st millennium BC hillfort

The hillfort, known as Vaikutėnų piliakalnis, is a unique archaeological site located in Utenos rajono savivaldybės teritorijoje, Vaikutėnuose. It is registered under the number AR1331 with the Lietuvos Respublikos kultūros paminklų sąrašo. According to historic research, the hillfort was founded at the beginning of the millennium BC. The digging was conducted by the Historical Institute in 1970 after a request made by the Lietuvos Respublikos kultūros minister for the preservation of cultural heritage – 2005-04-29; Nr.

ĮV-190. On its approximately 3-hectare plot, the hillfort is largely overgrown with trees and shrubs. However, the upper and middle tiers can be seen, as the lower tier is overgrown with trees and the hill’s slope masks it from the west. The middle and upper tiers are visible only from the north, and from there, it is clear that the hillfort was constructed with three tiers. The upper tier is 3 meters above the ground, the middle tier 2 meters below the upper tier, and the lower tier 2 meters below the middle tier. The middle and upper tiers have stairs, and the lower tier is accessible through the north side.
