The Hidden Defense of Kepaluškalnis - A Medieval Bastion in Lithuania

Kepaluškalnis, a mound in the Šilalė district, Lithuania, could hold the secrets of medieval warfare. Its defenses may have rivaled the castles in Žemaitija. Dating back to the beginning of the 2nd millennium AD, the mound was surrounded by four bulwarks. Moats were present on the north and south sides, with one on the south. However, a homestead on the west side has damaged the bulwarks. Restoration works in 2002-04 proved harmful to the mound. Today, the mound still stands with a monument for Vytautas the Great at its foot. It is possible that Vytautas himself visited Kepaluškalnis during his reign.
