The sun lay white as chalk on the facades of Strandvägen. The cement balcony floors and curved wrought iron railings cast a final squaring patch of long shadow on the stucco walls. Where they were yellow or cream, the patch became bluer, but where the balcony had the thinnest honeysuckle mix in color, the shade was coolly black. It was a melting warm morning at the end of May. In the corner house number 12 – directly attached to Director Bendel's estate - stood the stooped porter's wife on the top step of the portal and stared at the drangway at the kiosk of the Grebbe Slopes' Company.
