5 Prominent Archeological Sites: The Forgotten Fortress of Šeimyniškėliai

The Šeimyniškėliai hillfort, also known as Voruta, is located in the Anykščiai district, nestled between Šeimyniškėliai and Naujūjų Elmininkų villages, near the Radiškis–Anykščiai–Rokiškis road. Despite being one of the five most studied hillforts in Eastern Europe, it has remained relatively unknown to tourists until the 20th century. Historian Antanas Vienuolis, a native of Anykščiai, organized tours to the hillfort during this period, but it remained largely ignored under Soviet ideology due to its association with the Lithuanian government. The hillfort spans approximately 2,000 square meters and dates back to the 12th century. Over the years from 1990-2005, archeologist Gintautas Zabiela excavated the entire hillfort and uncovered entrances, walls, and a medieval castle built in the 12th century and abandoned by the 14th century.
