Lost Lithuanian Hillfort Unearthed

Buivydų piliakalnis, a Lithuanian hillfort, has remained hidden until now, nestled on the other side of a steep natural slope. It is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers west of the road from Kaunas to Zarasai, overlooking the Miaria River. The hillfort sits upon a wide plateau, surrounded by a 13-meter high natural slope. It spans approximately 40 x 45 meters. Its slope towards the Miaria River, about 30 meters long, dips 4 meters from its surface and 5 meters deep at its base. Archaeological findings in 1969 revealed trenches surrounding the hillfort. No ceilings made of stones were found, but pottery was unearthed. In the center of the hillfort, stones are arranged in a line.
