The first-millennium fortification of Kivylių

Kivylių piliakalnis reveals how ancestors constructed a fortification on a mound by a swamp.

Kivylių piliakalnis, also known as Pilalė, is an archaeological fortification site located in the Skuodas district near the village of Kivyliai. It is situated on a separate mound on the edge of a swampy valley, with slopes of medium height and about 4 metres in height reaching from the west, north, and east.

The site features an oval plateau measuring 22 by 18 metres, stretching in a north - south direction. On the southern side, a small bend in the terrain separates the plateau from the height. The southern slope was fortified in 1944, and the plateau contains burials from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Preliminary archaeological research on the fort was conducted in 1966 by the Lietuvos istorijos institutas. They dated the fortification to the first millennium. Today, the mound is covered with oak trees.
