The modernist and eclectic styles of Ca l'Aymà

Discover Ca l'Aymà in El Masnou, a local cultural heritage site featuring a striking polygonal balcony with stained glass and ceramic.

In the town of El Masnou, Maresme, stands Ca l'Aymà, also known as El Castellet, a building recognized as a local cultural heritage. Designed by the Barcelona architect Roc Cot i Cot in 1907, the construction was directed by his brother Jordi Cot i Cot. The building belonged to Antònia Pagès Llimona, the widow of Aymà. Between the years 1965 and 1969, it was used as a hotel known as Hotel Castellet. Since 1988, it has served as a private geriatric residence.

The building is composed of four distinct bodies with rectangular and square floor plans and varying heights. The facades of the bodies combine smooth white stucco with visible brick. Two of these bodies are crowned with merlons, and the third, the tallest, is topped by a four-sloped inclined roof. The cornices of the entire complex are formed by an overhang of tiles and brick corbels.

The windows have an esglaonada shape at the top with cantilevered brick. A remarkable element is the polygonal balcony with stained glass and ceramics located at the corner of the two main bodies. At the back is the tower-watchtower, with a pyramidal roof of glazed ceramic. The compositional elements of the complex can be classified as modernist or eclectic.
