The history of Can Malet in Masnou

Explore the history of Can Malet, a farmhouse in Masnou, Catalonia, that transitioned from a 1736 renovation to a municipal facility.

Originally, Can Malet was a farmhouse in the town of Masnou, Catalonia. In 1703, the property was sold to the tavern owner Vicenç Rogent, who restored the house, giving it a more stately appearance and constructing a chapel in 1736. It is believed that this property may have been the "mas Nou" that gave the town its name.

Vicenç Rogent married Anna Maria Taulats in his first marriage, and their daughter Jerònima Rogent i Taulats married Salvador Puig. In his second marriage, Rogent married Eulàlia Canyellas; they were succeeded by his daughter Maria Antònia Rogent i Canyellas, who married Salvador Casas i Costa. Their son, Antoni Francesc Casas i Rogent, married Josepa Romanyà i Costa, with whom he had five children. One of these children, Francesca, married the royal broker Josep Antoni Malet, and they settled in the old house of the farm's sharecroppers, which then became known as Can Malet.

In 1985, the property, which was already municipal property, was declared a ruin and demolished, though the facade was preserved. A modern building was constructed behind the facade to house a senior center and premises for municipal activities. Today, the building features a central body and two lateral parts with pointed arch windows and neoclassical pilasters.
