The 16th-century Crypt of Juan Gil de Zamora: The Capella del Deán within the

In the 14th century, the prolific scholar Juan Gil de Zamora, a close associate of Alfonso X el Sabio, was laid to rest within the Capella del Deán, a chapel nestled within the Convent of San Francisco Extraponte in Zamora.

Erected in the 16th century under the watchful eye of Gil de Hontañón, the Convent of San Francisco Extraponte houses the Capella del Deán. This chapel is the chosen burial place for Juan Gil de Zamora, a renowned writer and preceptor who shared intellectual camaraderie with Alfonso X el Sabio and tutored Sancho IV of Castille. Since 2007, the Capella del Deán has been hosting exhibitions and conferences. However, it is currently undergoing a restoration project at the dawn of the 21st century and has been the headquarters of the Fundación Hispano-Portuguesa Rei Afonso Henriques since 1994.
