The late Visigothic church -- a remnant of its time

San Pedro de la Nave, a late Visigothic church located in the small village of El Campillo in the municipality of San Pedro de la Nave-Almendra, dates back to the reign of the Visigothic King Egica (687–702). It is considered a late example of this architectural style. Despite its modest appearance, the church originally belonged to a monastery in the Esla River valley, near the Vía de la Plata, the Roman road linking the cities of Mérida and Astorga. Later, San Pedro de la Nave served as a parish church. In 1912, it was designated a national cultural heritage site (Bien de Interés Cultural, RI-51-0000103). In 1931, the church was relocated, making way for the Ricobayo Reservoir, but was eventually rebuilt at its current location, approximately two kilometers to the southeast.
