A thousand-year-old archaeological site in a Lithuanian forest: Gasiai hillfort

In the heart of Zarasai, Lithuania, a site shrouded in mystery lies. The Gasiai hillfort, 1.16 hectares in size and over 1000 years old, remains mostly untouched. Straddled by a crossing road, it sits on the highest point of a hill. The hillfort's unique structure echoes millennia of stories. The base of the west-northwest corner is 0.3 meters wide and 6 meters across. The hillfort's walls are built from square stones that reach heights of 10-12 meters. The lower portions are filled with brick and stone. Excavated by the Lithuanian Institute of History in 1999, the Gasiai hillfort awaits the right to perform archaeological excavations, which was granted in 2006 on November 15.
