Buried deep in the heart of Burbonys forest lies a hidden treasure – an ancient burial mound, part of Lithuania’s distant past. The Aikštelė, or burial mound, is a fascinating relic, discovered in 1968 by a scientific research team. The mound, about 100 meters long, 2-3 meters high, and 14 meters wide at the base, is oval in shape, approximately 15x12 meters. The outside of the Aikštelė is built of earth walls reinforced with rows of stones. The back part of the mound covers an area of 0.7 hectares.
The mound was declared a cultural heritage item by the Lithuanian Republic’s Council of Ministers in 1998. The exact purpose of the Aikštelė remains a mystery, but it is thought to belong to the burial traditions of the pre-Christian tribes who once roamed these lands. Archaeologists have discovered ancient tools and weapons near the mound, hinting at a high-ranking warrior buried within. The Aikštelė, located in Burbonių miške, is an archaeological site marked as historical and a tourist attraction.
