Iron Age Hill Fort: Hidden Oval-Shaped Fortification Unearthed in Baltakarčiai

Halfway up a sunny hill, just off Utena – Sudeikiai road, lies an oval-shaped archaeological site, registered as a cultural monument under the code 7078. This ancient hill fort is found in a separate hill, surrounded by a ditch – a ditch on the western side, 20x14 meters in size, with an average width of 1.5 meters. On the western side of the hill, there is a triangular terrace 12x19 meters in size, 3-5 meters above the hill. The archaeological site is overgrown with undergrowth, with gaping holes and gullies. The site was first identified in 1970 by the History Institute, making it a unique find in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Minister of Culture issued the cultural heritage preservation order for the site on April 29, 2005.
