The Sé Catedral de São José stands in the Centro Urbano at Praça 1º de Maio. A work of the architect Fernando Batalha, the building serves as the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Lubango. It functions as the Metropolitan See for the ecclesiastical province of Lubango in Angola.
The history of the site is marked by significant ecclesiastical shifts. On 27 July 1955, it was established as the Diocese of Sá da Bandeira from the Diocese of Nova Lisboa. It was later promoted to the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lubango on 3 February 1977.
The cathedral has been led by several notable figures. Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi has served as the Metropolitan Archbishop since 5 September 2009. He was preceded by Archbishop Zacarias Kamwenho, who served from 1997 to 2009. Earlier leaders included Archbishop Manuel Franklin da Costa and Archbishop Eurico Dias Nogueira.
The archdiocese also oversees several suffragan dioceses, including Menongue, Namibe, and Ondjiva.
