The 30-metre white marble Cristo Rei statue in Lubango

Overlooking the city of Lubango, this 30-metre statue was inspired by Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer and has stood since 1957.

In the heart of the vibrant land of Angola, above the city of Lubango, there lies a sight that tells stories of past epochs-the Cristo Rei, a white marble statue gracing the summit. Akin to the Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro, this magnificent figure was brought to life by the design of a Portuguese engineer, Frazão Sardinha.

This 30-metre-high statue was built in 1957 by the settlers of the region of Madeira. Built on a base of cement and hydraulic lime at an altitude of 2,130 meters above sea level, the monument rests on a foundation of stones, cement and bricks. The base features two levels to support a ladder to the last, which provides a more practical view of the statue.

The monument was declared an Angolan World Heritage Site in 2014. Since 1957, this regal figure has dominated the skyline, offering all who reach it a spectacular view of the city below.
