The Geisterhaus is a former residential house located on the farm Neuheusis, approximately 42 km west of Windhoek in the Khomashochland of Namibia. Built in 1911, the building served as a National Monument. It was constructed by the company LEMCO (Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company) and named after the chemist Justus von Liebig.
In the years following its construction, high-ranking employees of the company were accommodated in the house. The site was chosen for its exposed position and the good all-around view. In 1939, the government acquired the farmland from the Liebig company to divide it into 65 farms to create land for new settlers.
In 1945, the house was given to the family of the well-known photographer Margaret Courtney-Clarke. In 1964, Wilhelm Hoff purchased the farm Neuheusis. Since then, the house has stood empty and is falling into decay. It is clearly visible from the C28 main road and is situated on fenced private farmland where access is only possible with permission from the owners.
