The Royal Abbey of Saint-Michel de Bois-Aubry, a monument historique in Bois-Aubry, France, dates back to the early 12th century. Known for its historical, artistic, and cultural significance, the abbey is a remarkable witness to Roman and Gothic architectural styles. Originally built as an oratory dedicated to Saint Michael, it was later raised to an abbey in 1138 by Archbishop Hugues d'Étampes of Tours. The abbey has subsequently traversed various historical periods, including the Wars of Religion, the French Revolution, and the Modern era.
It has been mentioned by Popes Eugene III and Alexander III and has royal letters from Kings Louis XI and Charles VIII. It was even the abbatiat of Charles de Ronsard in 1544, the brother of the famous poet. In the 1970s, the abbey was owned by an Orthodox monastic community. Restoration campaigns were carried out from 1978 to 2006, during which time a gisant (effigy) from the 12th century was discovered. Since the end of 2006, the abbey has been owned by Marc-Olivier Gribomont.
Today, the site of the Royal Abbey of Saint-Michel de Bois-Aubry is a private site, but guided tours are available under certain conditions.
