The Hidden Castle of Château de l'Islette

The Hidden Castle of Château de l'Islette

Take a timeless journey across the Indre to discover a secret twin to Azay-le-Rideau. There's no battle cry here, just a tale as unique as the castle itself.

Nestled two kilometers west of Azay-le-Rideau, there's another castle hidden away in Cheillé, Indre-et-Loire. Known as Château de l'Islette, its lineage dates back to 1295 when it was under Jean Pannetier, the Bailli of Touraine, who held the fief of l'Islette, a dependency of Île-Bouchard. For an impressive three centuries, this domain belonged to the esteemed Maillé family, a noble lineage of Touraine, whose L'Islette branch was established in the 14th century by Guy, the last son of Hardouin VI de Maillé and Jeanne de Montbazon. It's worth mentioning that though the postal address is in Azay-le-Rideau, the castle itself resides in Cheillé.
