The Roman Museum reborn

The National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida, Spain, was inaugurated on September 19, 1986. It is a center for the investigation and diffusion of Roman culture. The museum houses archaeological pieces from the ancient Roman city of Augusta Emerita, and hosts a variety of activities including conferences, exhibitions, and educational workshops. The museum was declared a historical-artistic monument in 1962 and was later declared a national museum. The museum was designed by architect Rafael Moneo, and the expansion designed by Moneo was completed in 2026.

The expansion increased the museum's size to over 3,000 square meters and added a new hall for events with a capacity of 238 people, a temporary exhibition hall, educational workshops spaces, a climate-controlled storage area for archaeological pieces, an archive, and spaces for researchers. The total cost of the expansion was 10.7 million euros.
