The red citadel overlooking the white village

The red citadel of Castell de Vilafamés, located in the Spanish region of Catalonia, sits atop a 400-meter hill overlooking the white village below. This castle, dating back to the 14th century and initially conquered by James I in 1233, has undergone various transformations throughout history, from its original Muslim foundation to later restorations in the 14th century and adaptations during the Carlist Wars in the 19th century. The oldest surviving remains of the castle are from the 14th century, when the Master of the Order of Montesa forced the inhabitants of Vilafamés to repair and strengthen its fortifications. Today, large segments of the original structure remain, including the characteristic towers, and the castle is currently being restored.
