Strategically Placed Medieval Castle: Castell de Montornès, Spain

Atop a mountain in Spain's south, the strategically placed 11th-century Castell de Montornès gives a peek into medieval wars. Overlooking the vast maritime area between the Coves and Millars rivers, the castle initially belonged to the town of Benicàssim. The Castle de Montornès was seized by the Knights Templar in 1234. Throughout its history, it passed through different noble families, like the Casalduch, before being abandoned. The nearby area was once home to early agricultural communities. Today, the castle stands quiet, with its outer walls in ruins, yet still providing glimpses into its past. The purpose of the second lookout tower remains a mystery.
