Lithuania's Hidden Gem: The Millennia-Old Oval Stone Fortress at Padaigų

Hidden in the heart of Jonava, the oval hillfort known as Padaigų Piliakalnis, was built over a thousand years ago. Its diameter measures 9 meters by 8 meters, with a 4.5-meter high entrance, 15 meters wide. This entrance leads to a staircase, 15 meters wide, reaching 16 meters high and 15 meters wide, 1 meter thick. The entrance stands 13-15 meters high. The fortress, constructed from stones, was once covered by forests until 1971 when the Institute of History unearthed it. On May 19, 1998, the Lithuanian Government declared Padaigų Piliakalnis a cultural heritage site. Covering an area of 5000 m², it is located on a hillside in the Neris river valley, with a moat surrounding it.
