The mysteries of Papiliakalnis hill

The Papiliakalnis hill, located near Makauskai, Pavyžupis, stands at an altitude of 178 meters and dominates the landscape. The hill is oval-shaped, estimated to be 50 meters wide from east to west and 24 meters from north to south. The hill was originally enclosed by one wall, with a remnant of the second wall, located 2-2.5 meters below the surface, leaving a 3 meter wide and 12 meter long terrace. The hill has a height of 22 meters. However, in 1944, the hillfort was heavily fortified, though it was heavily damaged during World War II and has been excavated. The hillfort is dated from the 1st century to the 2nd century and was included in the catalog of Lithuanian cultural heritage monuments in 1973. Archaeologists studied the hill in 1965. It is still not well-known and remains a hidden gem for many visitors.
