Naujieenele Hill, located in the territory of Kalvarijos municipality, is an open-air museum that invites visitors to travel back in time. The hill is registered as a cultural heritage site by the Lithuanian Republic’s Cultural Heritage Preservation Bureau in 1998. It is believed to have been built between the 1st and 2nd centuries. The hill is 150 meters from the Vyžupio canal. The oval altar, 28x25 meters in size, is situated in the center of the hill.
Surrounding it are sixteen-meter tall statues buried in the ground, up to their necks. A 1.5-meter high statue can be found in the 16-meter long pit, 1 meter deep. The altar is badly damaged due to erosion. A triangle-shaped fort was built during the Third Baltic War but today only the base remains. Every year, on the last Sunday of August, the hill is the site of a historic reenactment of the Battle of Grunewald, fought between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Teutonic Order in 1410.
