A Mysterious Iron Age Fort Concealed in the Woods

The Iron Age fort, known by the name Šaltinėnų piliakalnis or Aštrusis kalnas, is hidden deep within the woods near Šaltinėliai, Birštonas municipality. It can be approached from Siponos-Nemajūnų kelias, to the right of Šilėnai, approximately 400 meters from its start. The oval mound, measuring approximately 25x20 meters, has a tall, imposing stone slab in the center, standing 12 meters high. This stone slab is encircled by a 15-meter wide, 0.3-meter deep circular ditch, filled with tangled tree trunks. The mound was discovered in 1953 by the History Institute and is believed to be from the Iron Age. Its registration was done on 2007-09-26, and its plot area extends over 1.30 hectares. The mound is encompassed by a 10-meter wide moat, also filled with tree trunks.
