Secrets of the 5th-8th Century Norkūnų II Forest Fortress

Norkūnų II piliakalnis, tucked away 4 km west of Norkūnų in Prienismo rajono savivaldybe's territory, is an archaeological site encompassing around 17,000 square meters. Surveys by the Institute of History in 1964-1965 revealed remnants of a 5th to 8th-century AD village here. The site is safeguarded by protective zones. A 2002 expedition unveiled the palisade, revealing pottery and other artifacts strewn about. The highest part of this fortress, fortified with stones and bricks, soars to 45 meters, spans 16 meters wide, and rises 5 meters high. Visitors can see remains of pottery, flint tools, bone tools, and other relics on the site, giving insight into the lives of past inhabitants.
