The hillfort with the hidden village

Stand over the bank of the Yglė in the Marijampole region, in the Šakališkiai village, you won't find much to show for the 10-meter high hill. But dig down, and the past comes to life. The hillfort here is ancient, perhaps nearly a thousand years old. It stands at the location of a once-thriving village. The settlers here farmed the land, made pottery, and walked with their neighbors for miles. Today, nothing is left save the remains of the hillfort, but the discovery of the village is recent.
