Sinking hillfort shrouded in mystery

Pašlavantys Hillfort is a 3-hectare archaeological site located in the Prienai district, 7 km south of Pašlavantys village, Šilavota seniūnija. It is positioned on a separate hill, with an oval shape and dimensions of 13x8 m, sinking about 5 m below the surrounding landscape. Archaeological research of the hillfort was conducted by the Lithuanian Historical Institute in 1954. It surrounds a settlement from the 3rd century, and remains of ceramic, pottery, bricks, and stone were found at the site. Pašlavantys Hillfort is believed to date back to between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD.

The Lithuanian Republic's Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee registered the hillfort as a cultural heritage object on May 19, 1998 (No.612). It is listed in the List of Lithuanian Hillforts, and references to Pašlavantys Hillfort can be found in the following books: 'Wędrówka po gubernii augustowskie w celu naukowym odbite.' (1989) and 'Užnemunės krašto piliakalniai.' (1997).
