The Fortified Settlement on the Edges of Ancient Samanis Lake

Tucked away on the bank of Samanis Lake in the Ignalina region, Sokiškiai hillfort appears ordinary at first glance. Yet, beneath this unassuming terrain lies a treasure trove of history.ology. Researchers have uncovered remnants dating back to the 1st millennium BC, including stone, wooden, and clay objects, as well as pottery. The excavation of the oval section of the site, for instance, revealed a 1.7-meter wide gate. The first construction elements found at the site date back to the 1st millennium BC. The site covers approximately 40,000 square meters, and a protective zone of 3,502,000 square meters surrounds it. Many fascinating artifacts discovered at the site are now housed at the Radbodis Museum.
