The Hidden Battlefield: Veliuonos II Piliakalnis - A Lithuanian Fortress of

Veliuonos II piliakalnis, a unique hill fort, presents a flat top on its eastern part, while a steep slope dominates the western half. This hill, situated 2.65 kilometers east of the first hill fort in Veliuonos, stands 7-8 meters above the Nemunas River, with a steep gradient on each side. An intriguing discovery lies in the eastern part of the hill fort: a pit, 13 meters deep, and 11 to 11.5 meters wide.

This pit held the remains of approximately 900 arrows, 4 crossbows, and numerous artifacts made from wood, stone, metal, clay, and other materials, such as two cylindrical stones, 13 stone arrows from Švarčiavas Hill, a clay kiln, barrels, pots, textiles, ceramics, pieces of glass, a fragment of a kauri tree, a cylindrical spinning device fragment, and a piece of raft. The fort serves as a tourist attraction, celebrated for its cultural significance.
