The Contested Fortress of Bisena

Bisena, a Lithuanian wooden fortress, was destroyed in battle by the Teutonic Order. The nature of the conflicts remains unknown, but they certainly were disruptive.

Known as Bisena or Kolainiai, this wooden fortress was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the Lithuanian Crusade. Its exact location remains a mystery, though it is generally believed to be Kartupėnai Hillfort near the confluence of the Kartupis and Neman, in the Jurbarkas District Municipality. The Teutonic Order burned it down in 1283 and 1316. After the burning down of Kolainiai in 1291 and Bisenė in 1316, Junigeda (Veliuona) became the westernmost Lithuanian fortress along the Neman.
