The hidden past of Lokavos hill

The hillfort of Lokavos, named after the historical settlement of the same name, is located in the second quarter of the Lakavos forest, visible from the edge. It lies about 1.35 km from the Ramučiai–Vegeriai road through Vėlaičiai. The hillfort partially emerges from the dense forest canopy, with natural stairs that climb up to 20 meters in some places. The natural stairs, revealed only in the southern part, are covered by trees in other areas. The hillfort has cultural layers with remnants of pottery, and the height of the stairs ranges from 16 to 18 meters above the ground level. Archaeological studies of the hillfort were conducted by the Institute of History of Lithuania in 1966. The hillfort is dated from the 1st millennium BC to the 13th century. The hillfort is listed in the catalogue of cultural and historical monuments of Lithuania.
