Ancient relics: Remains of two Lithuanian hillforts discovered in the Mažeikiai

The Daubariai hillforts, located in the Mažeikiai district, Lithuania, are found at the confluence of the Venta and Viešetė rivers. The larger Daubariai I guards the Viešetė on the right bank and has an elongated oval shape, 51 meters long and 26 meters wide. The smaller Daubariai II, located 150 meters south of Daubariai I, is truncated in the shape of a cone. A cultural layer from two different periods - the lower one from the 1st century BC and the upper one from the 5th to 13th century - was found at both hillforts. Artefacts such as pottery, iron arrowheads, and a birch-bark bag containing bronze scrap were discovered during archaeological excavations in 1975 and 1976.
